AV Receiver Protection Mode and No-Sound Faults

An amplifier that powers up and then shuts down within seconds is doing exactly what it was designed to do. Protection mode is a safety circuit responding to a fault condition, and the most common cause is external rather than internal – usually something wrong at the speaker terminals.

This guide covers the diagnostic sequence for protection shutdowns and for the separate problem of a receiver that stays on but produces no sound.

Impedance ratings and configuration options vary between receivers, and the Denon receiver manuals are what any technician will want to see.

Protection mode: the first thing to check

Disconnect every speaker cable from the receiver, then power it on with nothing connected.

If it stays on, the fault is external – a speaker, a cable or a connection. This is the good outcome and covers most cases.

If it still shuts down with nothing connected, the fault is internal and the unit needs service.

That single test splits the diagnosis in half and takes two minutes.

    Finding the external fault

With the receiver confirmed stable on its own, reconnect one speaker at a time, powering on between each.

Check for stray strands of wire bridging the positive and negative terminals. This is the single most common cause, and a single loose strand is enough.

Check the terminals at the speaker end as well as at the receiver.

Check for a damaged cable run, particularly anywhere it passes under a rug, through a wall or behind furniture.

Check speaker impedance against the receiver’s rating. Connecting speakers below the rated impedance, or wiring pairs in parallel on one channel, can trigger protection.

Check for a failed driver. A speaker with a shorted voice coil presents near-zero impedance and trips protection immediately.

Strip speaker wire conservatively and twist the strands tightly. Banana plugs eliminate this category of fault entirely and are worth the modest cost.

    Ventilation and thermal shutdown

Some protection events are thermal rather than electrical. A receiver in a closed cabinet with no airflow will overheat, particularly when driving a demanding load at volume.

Check clearance above and around the unit.

Check the ventilation slots are not blocked by dust or by something resting on top.

Feel whether the unit is hot before shutdown. Thermal events follow a period of use; electrical faults are usually immediate.

No sound, but the unit stays on

A different problem with a different sequence:

Check the input selection matches where the source is connected. Receivers have many inputs and the assignment can be reconfigured.

Check whether the unit is muted, or whether a headphone connection is disabling the speakers.

Check the speaker configuration setting. A receiver configured for a speaker layout you do not have may route audio to channels that are not connected.

Check the source device’s own audio output setting. A source outputting a format the receiver cannot decode produces silence rather than an error.

Try a different input and a different source to isolate.

    Sound from some channels only

Run the receiver’s automatic setup or calibration routine, which tests each channel in turn and reports what it finds.

Use the test tone function to check each channel individually.

Swap the cables between a working and a non-working channel. If the fault moves, it is the cable or speaker; if it stays, it is the receiver.

Check the audio format. Stereo content will not produce surround output without upmixing enabled.

Speaker layout settings are named differently by each maker, which is why user guides for most appliances are worth having open during setup.

    HDMI-specific silence

HDMI adds its own category of problem. Handshaking between devices can fail, producing picture without sound or nothing at all.

Power cycle every device in the chain, starting with everything off, then powering on source, receiver and display in that order.

Try a different HDMI cable rated for the bandwidth in use.

Set the source to output a compressed format or PCM to rule out a decoding mismatch.

Check for firmware updates on the receiver, since HDMI compatibility fixes are common.

    When it needs service

A receiver that enters protection with no speakers connected, or that shows visible damage, a burning smell or scorching around the terminals, needs a qualified technician. Amplifier power supplies store charge and the internal work is not a user task.

What helps is arriving with the results of the disconnection test, because it tells the technician immediately whether they are looking for an output stage fault.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I use 4-ohm speakers on a receiver rated for 6 or 8?

Sometimes, at moderate volume, and some receivers have an impedance setting for it. Sustained loud use with a lower impedance than rated is what causes trouble.

Why does it only trip at high volume?

Usually a marginal condition – a partial short, an impedance mismatch or inadequate cooling – that only draws enough current to trip the circuit under load.

Is protection mode damaging the unit?

The opposite. It is preventing damage. Repeatedly resetting and retrying without finding the cause is what risks harm.

Note: disconnect the receiver from the mains before working at the terminals. Do not open the housing – amplifier power supplies retain charge. Impedance ratings and configuration options differ by model.
